Master Bedroom makeover REVEAL!

by Meriah

Well, I just revealed my herring bone accent wall in my master bedroom and boy did it turn out AWESOME! Since I was adding the accent wall, I went ahead and did a bit of a refresh of our bedroom, too! I already showcased the dresser makeover and bookshelf … so now it’s time for the full master bedroom makeover reveal!

I loved our room before, but it needed some love to make it stand out. The walls still had the builders paint and the whole room felt a bit “blah”. I loved our huge Acacia wood bed, but it was time to move on to something that would showcase the herring bone wall. It was almost 10 years old and was ready for a new home!

So, between the wall and the bed and other minor updates, this room is now so calm and serene and worthy to be a sanctuary of rest … if I ever get time to rest with three kids under five. HA!

Prepping for a master bedroom makeover

As I was preparing the master bedroom makeover, I knew I needed a few “big” things. First, the walls needed painted. I wanted a new bed that would reveal the amazing herring bone wall behind it, and new nightstands. Those were the big-ticket items I needed to take care of. Everything else was minor.

I thought a while about what color I wanted the walls in the room. After I landed on Pure White for the herring bone wall, I was looking for a complimenting color for the remaining three walls. I also wasn’t planning on changing the accent color in my room from a teal-ish color, so it would also have to coordinate with that.

Choosing a paint color

A few options I came up with were the existing builders color … but in an eggshell sheen, a light gray, such as Repose Gray from Sherwin Williams, Sea Salt (another Sherwin Williams amazing color), or possibly just pure white.

Drumroll, please! So, I landed on Sea Salt. I had done this color in my prior home in the main living areas and it was amazing. It’s a chameleon color that seems to change based on the blue, green or gray tones around it. Plus, it’s a calming color. It would go with my accent color, the herring bone wall and work perfectly with the color scheme throughout the house as well. Repose gray would have worked too, but since I have it all over my basement walls, I decided to go with Sea Salt.

I sent my lovely husband to grab the paint for me one evening, while I made dinner. That next day I got to work painting. It only took me about 2.5 hours to paint the remaining walls in the room and I was done!

Selecting a new bed

Next up was the bed. It took a lot of looking around online and local areas to find the perfect bed. I had pretty much determined I’d want a black farmhouse bed, but wasn’t quite sure about moving to a headboard that didn’t have a solid back. After some thought, I decided we’d give it a try. We don’t do a lot of sitting up in bed and we don’t keep a TV in our room, so we should be fine. Always lots to consider in this master bedroom makeover reveal!

I ended up selecting a bed from Wayfair that was able to ship immediately. There was another one I had my eyes on, but it wasn’t available to ship for weeks … so I selected another one. I’m glad I got the one I did! We really love it and it was made very well!

The bedframe arrived about the time I painted the walls, so when the walls in the bedroom were refreshed, we put up the new bed! The day we put the bedframe in, my two-year-old son, Miles, ran into our room and proclaimed, “wow, mommy … you got a new bed. I like it!”. So, of course I felt we made a good choice since he approved. This kid, I tell ya, is a funny one. He keeps us laughing constantly.

Nightstand city!

Now on to the nightstands! This was a hard one to figure out. There were SOOOOO many options. At first, we were looking for something round that wasn’t white (so it wouldn’t disappear against the white herring bone wall). Or square would be fine, but didn’t want them to be too large. For a few days, my husband and I were sending texts back and forth of options. It was an obsession!

Finally, the weekend came and we could head to a few stores to see some nightstands in person. We went to a local furniture outlet and found a nice set! We loved the open bottom, as a place we could set the décor pillows every evening when we dressed down the bed. The bottom was gray and the top a wood color. The drawer handle matched perfectly with our bedframe…plus, they had only two left in stock. PERFECT. We were sold!

As we were leaving the store, we decided to peruse the ‘open box’ area they have on the side of the building. Miraculously, they had one of the end tables we had just purchased. You could hardly tell anything was wrong with the nightstand and it was almost $200 cheaper, being in the open box area. So, we purchased that one and returned the other … definitely worth the savings!

Putting the pieces together

With nightstands in tote, we were ready to put all the pieces of this master bedroom makeover reveal together. Herring bone wall: check. Painted walls: check. New bedframe: check. Nightstands in place: check.

I placed the bed in the middle of the herring bone accent wall with a nightstand on each side. The dresser was centered directly across from the bed. I then moved the bookshelf placement to be between our windows.

Décor time

As far as décor, I moved out one of our old lamps that used to sit on the nightstands and placed the remaining one on the dresser. I, finally, hung our sentimental painting above the dresser. I still need to get it framed, but at least it’s hung in our room.

Honeymoon painting

Quick background on this painting: we got this painting on our honeymoon in March of 2012. We were on a cruise and had a stop in the Bahamas. A street merchant was selling paintings and we loved it and brought it home! After almost 10 years, we really need to get a good frame on it! Hopefully soon!

Décor and more!

Anyway, I got it hung and placed a few pictures on the dresser below. I also grabbed the fleur-de-lis décor item from another area in my house and brought it to the dresser.

I rearranged my bookshelf a bit and took some pieces from around the house to make it look nice. To bring in lights next to each side of the bed, I got super adorable mason jar wall sconces. We hung one on each side of the bed. If anything else from this post, grab these sconces! They are a great price and look amazing!

The heart I have hanging directly above the bed was something I got at Hobby Lobby a few years ago. I had it saved in my bedroom closet till I could find the perfect place for it … and above the bed is the spot!

Oh, and I can’t forget the piece of artwork above the bookshelf. My husband got that for me for our anniversary this year. It fit perfectly above the bookshelf and helped elongate the visual eye since the windows stand taller than the bookshelf.  Besides some other minor décor updates, that’s about it for this master bedroom makeover reveal.

Refuge of relaxation

This room has become a true refuge of relaxation. I can’t wait to spend more time in there soaking in all the changes.
