Simple DIY Mudroom Entry Way Makeover

Mudroom Entry Way Makeover - Feature

Hello, hello! I’m on a countdown till we take a trip to Montana end of this month … but I’m super excited to show you the small makeover we did for our mudroom. It wasn’t functional for our family of five, so we did a simple DIY mudroom entry way makeover … and it turned out BEAUTIFUL!

The mudroom entry area, aka drop zone, is a core part to a family … at least to our family. We enter and exit the garage through the mudroom and all the bags and coats and hats and shoes end up somewhere in the area!

Boat time!

But before I share all about my fugly to functional mudroom, I have to share a few photos from our day on the boat! Last weekend we took a break and rented a boat on Lake Lanier in Georgia. We had an amazing day with friends and family and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Here are a few pictures from our adventure!

Aren’t these kiddos super adorable? Harper braved the water and floated a bit. Miles as well … but he mostly ATE, ATE, ATE! Sawyer really hated his life jacket, but came to be ok with it at some point during the day. Ben was our captain and I just enjoyed watching all the smiles!

Anyway … now back to the mudroom transformation!

Current state of mudroom affairs …

Our current mudroom was only set up with two hooks to hang stuff on. Which didn’t work for a family of five. I left this space neglected, but since I did a makeover for my main entry way, I thought I should finally show some love to the drop zone! See how boring it looks?

I teased about this upcoming project last week and now it’s time to show the debut!

Wait – you said Montana trip?

Before I get started … I did mention an upcoming trip to Montana. We leave end of May and plan to spend a good bit of time in my hometown, right in the middle of the state. The kids always have fun visiting, I have a mother and brother in the state and many other close friends to visit … so, we always to a trip yearly.

However, we didn’t get to visit in 2020 … due to covid, but also do the birth of Sawyer. So, a trip is due and I know my mom can’t wait to meet her grandbaby! It’s hard to believe he’s already one and they haven’t met … but that will be resolved soon!

Determining the design

As I was thinking about the design for the mudroom, I knew carrying the Rainwashed from Sherwin Williams color into this area would look great and be cohesive with the front door entry way project I just completed. Also, this room is across from the laundry room, so I thought I could also do the same wallpaper I did in there. It’s all about making each room design feel cohesive and purposeful!

Contemplating the design!

Room for more hooks!

So, first thing I did was purchase enough 1×4” wood to do a second layer of hooks on the wall and carry it across the wallpaper wall. This would give me the ability to add extra hooks for all our “stuff”! I then painted the wood (it was pre-primed) in pure white, which is the same color as our trim and the bench area in the mudroom. I did two coats to make sure it was covered nicely.

Wallpaper!

Next, I hung the wallpaper above the hook area on the chosen wall. The wallpaper hung quickly and turned out amazing! Then I painted the bottom portion of the wall and the area around the door in Rainwashed. I even touched up all the white trim to make it look extra clean and crisp!

Once the paint dried, I used paintable caulk on the 1×4” wood. I seal the top, bottom and edges and let that dry.

Hook party!

Then I hung the hooks! We did two hooks on the main mudroom wall above the bench. One the wallpaper wall, I decided to hang five so each of us could have our own hooks. Ben’s hook would be the far left and then each kid’s hook, with mine being last.

Décor!

I added the kid’s pictures above their hooks so they would know who’s is whose. I can easily update these frames with a new 5”x7” of them as they grow!

I grabbed some containers to hold balls and toys and gloves and hats and what-not in. I measured the openings and found some that would work great!

I also painted the small hall to the left of the mudroom in Rainwashed and put up our growth chart. A good friend of ours made it for us a few years ago and the kids love seeing how tall they are … it was about time I officially hung it!

Finishing up!

With the walls painted, hooks added, wallpaper up and décor placed … this simple, DIY mudroom entry way makeover was complete! This project was mostly elbow grease to make a huge impact. Not only visually, but functionally for our family! As I said, a family of FIVE needs more space in the drop zone … cause we got lots to drop on our way in and out of the door!

This is fabulous. I so envy anyone who has a mudroom or space that could be used as a mudroom. We just don’t have the space.
