How to create your own Alphabet Wall

Greetings friends! Hope all you mothers had an AMAZING Mother’s Day a couple weeks ago and were spoiled rotten … and maybe got a Best Mom Hands Down framed print I blogged about here! We mothers tend to go above and beyond for our families and it’s nice to have a day to be remembered…now, would you like to learn how to create your own alphabet wall?

Adoption #2

When we decided to adopt baby #2, I started getting the nursery together. We didn’t know if we’d have a boy or girl, so I made it gender neutral. Burt’s Bee’s had a line of alphabet blankets and sheets at the time, so I thought it’d be awesome to do an alphabet wall.

Oh, and spoiler alert .. our adoption #2 ended up being our Miles! We are so blessed to be his parents and we love the sweet spirit he is!

Theme and color scheme

I didn’t want just any alphabet wall. Letters can get expensive and I didn’t want them to look all the same. I also wanted them to fit the color scheme of aqua, taupe, gray and white … so the best thing I could think of was to DIY the alphabet wall.

First, I set out to Hobby Lobby to check out their clearance area and wood area. I found most my letters there for pretty cheap and knew that I could alter them to fit the color palette. I also perused Amazon for some letters and made some of my own on wood with paint or string. One thing I knew was that I wanted the A and the Z to be the largest letters, but everything else was fair game!

Customizing each letter!

Here’s a break down of each letter and how I altered them.

A – This was a solid wood piece I got from Hobby Lobby that I simply stained.

B – This letter was originally white. I took some aqua spray paint to give it the new color! Another Hobby Lobby find!

C – Hobby Lobby again … and I left this as it was originally. This was a letter I had around the house for my dog Charlie that had passed away the year prior, so I reused it for this alphabet wall.

D – I left this Amazon find as-is. The white was perfect!

E – This was a plain wood gift tag that I got from none other than Hobby Lobby. I stained it and cut out the letter ‘E’ in fabric. I then took Mod Podge and pasted it onto the stained gift tag.

F – Letter as-is, again from the Hobbs, and I had a frame on hand that I placed around it.

G – I took a piece of wood, stained and sanded it and then painted on the letter G! Simple and easy!

H – Another solid wood letter from Hobby Lobby that I stained. I then took a wood heart that I had on hand, painted it red, and glued it onto the H. I did this since my daughter’s name, Harper, starts with and H and I definitely do love her!

I – This letter was an all-white piece with lights that I got from Amazon. I then took out the “I” shaped insert and spray painted it aqua.

J – I scored this scrabble letter from Amazon and left it exactly how it came

K – Untouched letter K from Hobby Lobby – the white fit perfectly with the theme!

L – I did some string art for this one. I grabbed a piece of wood and painted it gray. Then I did a cursive “L” on it and did the string art in white.

M – Another Hobby Lobby find that was originally white and I used the aqua spray paint to give it a lift.

N – This letter is a metal one I scored from Amazon and let it’s metal do the talking.

O – “O” was a fun one! I found a round wood button at Hobby Lobby and painted it!

P – Letter “P” is a pressed wood letter from Hobby Lobby that I glued onto a painted piece of wood. To get the design on the “P”, I cut fabric and used Mod Podge to attach it to the letter!

Q – Another solid wood letter from Hobby Lobby that I painted.

R – For this letter, I took a solid white “R” from Hobby Lobby and painted the front a dark color. I stained a piece of wood and glued the “R” to the wood in the bottom right corner.

S – The “S” was originally like the “C” above, but I painted it in a taupe color.

T – This “T” was also originally like the “C” above, but this time I cut some fabric in the letter shape and used mod podge to glue it down. I’m telling you, always keep Mod Podge on hand, you’ll always find a use for it!

V – “V” was a pressed wood piece that I Mod Podge’d some fabric on as well. Again, from Hobby Lobby!

W – The “W” was originally like the letter F. I painted it, and a piece of wood, the same color and glued them together. Again, Hobby Lobby!

X – Now “X” originally was like the letter “K”, but I gave it some unique life by gluing on some decorated paper.

Y – I scored this in the clearance for 10 cents from Hobby Lobby and left it as-is. A super cute metal piece!

Z – We’ve come to an end! This Z came from Hobby Lobby and was a perfect size to be the ending piece to this alphabet wall. I left it untouched. It’s a metal/wood mix!

Whew … 26 letters is a lot!

Whew – that was a lot going through each letter and how I customized them … well, most of them anyway. Some I did keep as-is! I also want to add that before I started customizing them, I first laid them out in alphabetical order and in the way I would place them on the wall. I kept in mind spacing and how long each row needed to be. That is how I determined some of the customizations and which ones were ok to keep as-is.

Pre-planning placement

Laying them out is key to developing the right placement after you make them your own and are ready to put them on a wall!

I gotta say, an alphabet wall is a great option for a nursery, playroom, office, etc. And, as you can see, you can bring out your unique color scheme in them by doing a myriad of customizations.

A new home for the alphabet wall

I kept this alphabet wall up in Mile’s room till we moved to our current house. I was sad to part with them, but a teacher purchased them from me and put them up in her classroom. It made me happy knowing they would be enjoyed by lots of children!

There really are so many ways you can take a plain old letter and make it unique!
