How to Hang Wall Pictures Straight

Hanging Pictures - Feature

We are had a blast during our summer in Montana at my childhood home and I can’t believe it’s already July! How is it that time goes by so quickly? We blink and a moment has passed. OY. I’ll share some of our Montana fun, but I also want to share a quick and easy way on how to hang wall pictures straight!

Montana Fun

Our first couple weeks in Montana have consisted of hanging with our beloved “chosen” Grandpa Dick, fishing firsts with the kids, lots of play at the park and hanging out with friends. The kids are having the time of their lives and tell me they love it here more than home … well, of course they do! All they get to do in Montana is play and have fun!

Grandpa Dick

Grandpa Dick is an amazing man whom I’ve known for over 25 years. He and his wife June moved to my hometown in Montana in 2005 when I was 10/11. They started coming to our church and I have enjoyed their company ever since. June passed away a couple years ago, but I still keep in contact with Grandpa Dick and the kids just adore him.

As you can see, he was working hard combing Harper’s hair. Which, by the way, she first combed his “hair”! I don’t think there was much for her to comb! Miles enjoyed playing with his cane and Sawyer would roll a ball back and forth with him. It’s moments like these that you just want to cherish.

Fishing

Miles, in particular, really wanted to go fishing. Harper was super excited to go as well. We went to a local store and picked up some gear. Harper selected a Barbie fishing pole and Miles didn’t care, so we got a bit more solid pole for him … it’s still a kid’s pole, but will work a bit better for Ben to join in the fishing. We went to a local spot and put in our poles. We didn’t catch anything … but the kids had fun jumping in the water and playing around. It was nice, as we had the place to ourselves!

Bye, bye Montana!

Our Montana trip got cut short a few weeks. We just got back a little over a week ago. My husband’s boss passed away unexpectedly and he’s come back to help out and keep the company moving forward.

I gotta say, Ben is such a good guy. He doesn’t cause drama or strife and is an honest, hard working man. He puts God first, followed by family, and is honest to a fault. If you tell him not to say something, he won’t tell anyone … even if he really, really wants to. That’s integrity! He’s an awesome man of God and I pray for strength for him as he navigates these times of losing a mentor, boss and friend of 15 years.

How to hang wall pictures straight

Now, on to the main topic of this blog post. I’ve recently redone a few rooms in my house, such as Harper’s Room, Sawyer’s Room, Miles’s Room, or the Entry Way, which all required placing wall pictures in a straight line and evenly spaced along the wall. It’s super easy placing frames for a gallery wall or in diagonal, as it doesn’t require a straight line. But lining them up horizontally can be easy too!

Before starting!

Before you get started, make sure you have a level with a ruler on it. I have one that’s about 24″, so it can cover any distance I plan to do between pictures. Next, just follow these seven easy steps.

Step 1 – Determine height of pictures along the wall

Step 2 – Determine how far apart you want each picture
In this example, I determined them to be 15” a part

Step 3 – Locate middle of the wall

Step 4 – Place first nail at appropriate height and on the middle (if hanging an odd number of pictures) or ½ of the inches you wanted the pictures to be a part. In this example, because I chose 15”, I placed the first nail at the right height but 7.5” over from the middle.

Step 5 – Place your level above the first nail you hung and place your next nail 15” over, make sure it’s level!

Step 6 – Repeat placing nails 15” apart until you have enough hung for all your nails. You’ll place some to the left of your initial nail and some to the right.

Step 7 – Place your pictures and done! Take a step back to see the finished product!

Using the technique

I’ve used this technique in several different areas. At times, the hook on the back of a frame isn’t consistent across all frames, so I may need to adjust the nail up or down a little to accommodate. But, overall they do line up nicely. I just hang all the nails and place the photos. Super simple!

Hope this helps if you have several photos to hang in a row, vertical or horizontal. I also used this technique to hang some hooks for capes on my son’s bedroom wall as well. A level with a ruler on it is the trick on how to hang wall pictures straight!
