Complete List of Must Haves for Baby's 1st Year

Well, tomorrow my baby turns ONE. It’s hard to believe it. After having a baby during the pandemic and all the scares we had during the first half of the pregnancy, this is quite the milestone. He is a perfect gift from God and I am so blessed to be able to be his mama! So, with his one-year birthday in mind, I thought I’d share my complete list of must haves for baby’s 1st year!

First, let’s talk a bit about this Mr. Sawyer that is turning one. He’s a ham. He’s stubborn. He’s cute. He’s an excellent sleeper. He’s a good boy. He’s my baby. We will celebrate this weekend with a Captain America birthday party fit for a one-year-old. I’m sure he’s going to LOVE his very first cupcake!

It was strange giving birth in a pandemic. All the thoughts of what his birth and couple days after would be like were out the window. I had to wear a mask. His big brother and sister didn’t get to come meet him in the hospital. Nothing about the experience was traditional, but it was our experience and a story we’ll always have.

In reality, the circumstances didn’t matter … what mattered is that he arrived strong and healthy! And due to the pandemic, we enjoyed a lot of family time over his first year. I truly can’t ask for anything more than that!

Anyway, with Sawyer being my third baby since fall 2016, I’ve definitely discovered what the baby first year must haves are. There are so many options and items out there to purchase, much of which isn’t even necessary or goes unused. What is necessary is bonding and fostering good sleep patterns … they are pretty easy to foster in the first couple months and they are SO WORTH IT!

All three of my babies have slept 10-12 hours since they were 3 months old and it was easy. If you want help to make that happen, I definitely recommend the Mom’s On Call book. It’s liquid gold! I didn’t discover this book till after Sawyer was born, but I instinctively put into practice much of it with all my kids. Getting them sleeping through the night was priceless!

Sleep Stuff

Bassinet – I highly recommend the Halo Bassinet. You can get the swivel , or non-swivel … either way, the non-swivel slides to the side out of the way easily. Start with baby in Bassinet DAY ONE, so they get used to sleeping in it. Naps in it as well. You’ll get a lot of use out of it this way. Between 2-3 months, you’ll probably transition baby to crib … but this is useful till then! And you can buy new or used. And either way, you can sell yours after the first couple months!

Bassinet Sheets – Definitely get THREE bassinet sheets and waterproof pads. With baby’s spit up and blowouts, you will need one to wash, one for them to wear and one spare!

Crib – Once your baby is ready to transition from Bassinet to crib, you’ll need to be ready. Generally, us mama’s love to have the nursery all ready with Crib before the arrival, so grab one early and get it all set up!

Crib Mattress – Make sure to grab a crib mattress as well. There are a lot of options, but I like this baby’s first year one. It’s cozy and the outer layer is washable!

Crib sheets and pads – Just like the bassinet sheets, you’ll want to grab THREE crib sheets and two waterproof pads.

Bumper – You’ll also need a crib bumper. I prefer the breathable, mesh kind for safety reasons. Easy to install and they fit most cribs!

Swaddles – You’ll definitely need 4-5 swaddles. I always get the Muslin kind. They are the perfect material. We also LOVED the SwaddleMe. With the Velcro closure, it helps keep baby in there tight for the first couple months. If they still like the swaddle when they get a bit bigger and rolling over … or close to it, I’d recommend the Zipadee Zip. My 12-month-old still loves the Zipadee Zip and he can roll around, sit up and play in it. I can’t get him to sleep without it! I’m sure he’ll outgrow it one day…. right?!

Rocker – I thought the rocker should be in this sleep stuff list, since it’s mainly used to get baby ready for bed. We tried a rocker and a swivel glider and the swivel won, hands down. You can get one with a foot rest that rocks too, or no foot rest … but the swivel gliders are comfy and just what you’ll need!

Baby monitor – Last, but not least, for the sleep stuff category is a baby monitor. We have had amazing luck with Levana, but I can’t really find them out there to purchase. There are many options out there, so check reviews and find a good one!

Feeding Stuff

Bottles – If you aren’t breast feeding, then you’ll need bottles from day 1. If you are … you’ll need these too. HA! I really love the Dr Brown’s bottles. I used them with two of my kids. With the last kiddo, we ended up with Avent bottles, which work well too. He wasn’t feeding well and we finally got him feeding on Avent. I don’t think it was the bottle, just his need to learn how to have a strong suck … but we got successful on Avent and didn’t want to switch since he was on a roll. Both these bottle options have parts to clean, but if you rinse them right after each feeding, it really isn’t so bad! Always have the next nipple size on hand, too!

Sippy cups – There are a myriad of options, but few I’ve found that work well. The Dr Browns and the Munchkin Bite Proof sippy cups are the two I’ve had success with on all kids. The Dr Brown is a good first sippy cup since it starts with a normal nipple. The munchkin is great around 9 months. It’s ani-bite and doesn’t spill and they clean up easily in the dishwasher. These cups are a good option through toddlerhood!

Burp cloths – Really anything works from this category! Burt’s Bees has some great options as well as Gerber.

Bibs – I love the bandana bibs best for drooling and bottle feeding. Once they are a bit bigger and eating solid foods, I like the silicone bibs that catch food. Easy to clean and less mess!

Bottle Drying – These Boon grass things are amazing for drying bottles. The air can get underneath to help dry the inside and they throw in the dishwasher easily. Definitely worth having around!

To-go formula storage – This is a must have for life on the go. You can easily portion out your formula, then just bring a bottle and mix it on the go. Super simple!

Snack Cups – Ok … these are also a must have for life on the go. When baby is around 10 months old, they can feed themselves and having these cups to prevent spilling is necessary. You’ll get a lot of use out of these!

Baby bowls – We love these munchkin bowls with lids. They wash well, can be used on the go and work well at home, too … overall they meet multiple needs!

Baby spoons – Our faves are the munchkin safety spoons. These turn white if the baby food is too hot … or stay their normal color if it’s good.

Formula – There are a myriad of options here and it depends on yoru baby and their needs, but we had a lot of luck with Enfamil for all our babies. Target Up & Up is the equivalent and will save you lots of $$!

Disposable placemats – I didn’t know about these for my first two kiddos, but they are AMAZING! Easy placemat for eating in restaurants that you can place your kid’s food on so they can grab and eat from a clean surface … cause, we all know a plate would end up on the floor broken to pieces!

Name Labels – If you baby will be going to daycare or church our out where you need their bottles or bowls or clothes labeled, then you’ll want these awesome labels! They even last in the dishwasher or washing machine!

Bottle/Cup Labels – To further extend your bottle/cup labels to an amazing level, grab these orbital labels that slide up the cup and stay put … and can easily be moved to another cup. Fully customizable!

Highchair – A washable highchair is your best option. I searched around a lot for a good one and landed on the Skip Hop High Chair. I don’t see the easy wipe down version I have currently, but this version from 4Moms is similar! Easily cleans and when baby gets bigger you can remove the tray and push up to the table!

Travel Stuff

Car seat – For all three of my babies, I started with the Chicco Keyfit system for their first year. It’s easy to grab and go and the base is super simple to install. Definitely a win! Then I move on to the Diono RXT. These suckers fit nicely with three across in most SUVs, they are easy to install and look nicely too. They can start from infancy if you want to skip the Chicco, but they aren’t one you can carry around, which is why I wait to use it till my little one is about a year old.

Stroller – I stick with the Chicco system for my stroller. There are several options. A Caddy that carries only the infant carrier, a single stroller that holds the infant carrier and then transforms to a sitting stroller, OR a sit and stand that can also be used with the infant carrier. I have tried all three and the sit and stand is my personal favorite … mostly due to the fact I have three littles and it fits my needs well!

Diaper bag – We have used the ThirtyOne bag utility zip tote for all three babies and it’s been awesome! It has four areas for bottles, plenty of room inside for diapers, wipes, a changing pad, extra clothes … it really has been perfect, cost effective and awesome!

To-Go Changing Pad – These are needed for diaper changing on the go … and really, you can’t go wrong with any option!

Pack n Play – I tend to stick with the Graco pack n play. They work well and fit the need. I never had need for all the attachments to it…just the core pack and play piece. That’s really what’s useful, especially as a crib on the go!

Baby Carrier – These things are awesome! In baby’s first few weeks, they may want to feel close. A carrier helps with that. And, of course, they are necessary for on the go … whether out hiking, to a grocery store, or wherever, you’ll find so much use for a baby carrier. I’ve tried a few and my favorite is the Baby Bjorn. It’s easy to put on and is comfy for baby.

Booty Stuff

Changing table/pad/covers – These items are a given. You NEED a changing table. You NEED a pad with covers for it. I prefer a changing table with drawers and room on the top for a basket. In the basket I place my diapers and wipes and diaper cream. It just seems to flow well. You only need one changing pad, but grab 3 covers. Again, one to put on, one to wash and one spare. I also used some top covers as well, which are super helpful for the early days when things go flying a bit more from the baby … if you know what I mean!

Diaper cream – My favorite diaper cream is Boudreaux’s Butt Paste. Works well. Enough said! I use my fingers to spread it, but they have little paddles, which are hilarious … but grab one if you want!

Diapers – They say “Live and learn and then get Luvs” … but I say stick with Pampers. I’ve had the best of luck with them. Start with Pampers Swaddlers and move to Pampers Baby Dry about size 2 or 3. If you find the baby going through a diaper during the night, it’s time to switch to the next size!

Wipes – Sticking with Pampers, I get the Pampers Sensitive wipes. I buy in bulk off Amazon and call it a day. For cleaning hands and faces, I used Dove wipes. We have a set of these in the kitchen, in the car and in the diaper bag … super handy to have around for cleaning up!

Health Stuff

Thermometer – Definitely a must have. They say Rectal is the most accurate. We used one while baby was little and then moved to ear temp. The forehead ones seem to reflect low, so not sure about them.

Humidifier – We LOVE a humidifier. These are a must for baby. Look for a cool mist humidifier that will work for your room size. Vick’s makes some good options, just make sure you have one on hand!

Saline – When baby get’s congested, you’ll want to have some saline nose spray on hand.

Nose sucker – You’ll get sent home from the hospital, most likely, with a bulb sucker … but grab the Nose Frieda. Electric one or manual. They are amazing and help you keep your baby’s nose clear!

Nail clippers – Again, something you know you need. Those nails get long and sharp quickly!

Comb/brush – Along with nail clippers, make sure you have a little comb and brush on hand. You can get several items in the baby grooming kit at one price. Definitely worth it!

Gripe water – Good to have on hand when your newborn has the hiccups!

Gas drops – Keep these available! Your newborn will thank you with easier feedings and longer rests if their belly feels good!

Toothbrush/toothpaste – The banana toothbrush is good to start along with some baby toothpaste. Then you can move on to a traditional toothbrush with a small head and soft bristles.

Bathing Stuff

Baby wash – I lean toward Dove baby wash. It’s clean and fresh and just works well for baby!

Baby Lotion – I have found that Aveeno works the best for baby’s skin. It’s a nice texture and works well!

Baby towels – Have about 3 hooded baby towels on hand to dry baby off after bath. I’m fond of Burt’s Bees baby, but there are many cute options available!

Bathtub – I like this 3 in 1 tub that works from newborn to toddler. I always start out with it in my sink and as they get a bit bigger, I move it to the bathtub. Make sure to grab a few bath toys, too!

Washcloths – Soft washcloths are good for baby! Burt’s Bees has some nice ones. They have so many cute options for baby!

Soothing Stuff

Pacifiers – I found best luck with the Dr Browns or Avent pacifiers. And for the newborn stage, the Wubbanub is awesome! Helps them keep the paci in so it’s not always falling out! Our first two babies loved their paci’s … Sawyer refused them from day one … but every once in a while he’s good with his Moo Moo Mr. Cow Wubbanub.

Teethers – These key teethers that go in the freezer work well. My son also loved the moonjax teether. There are so many options, but most will just love something cold in their mouth!

Clothing Stuff

Clothes – Obviously, you’ll need clothes for your new baby. I’d say 5-7 onesies, 5-7 sleepers, pants and shirts and socks and hats … and whatever else you like! I’m sure you’ll go overboard and have way too many options … but hey, we all do! Baby clothes are just too cute to buy! If you have trouble getting baby’s socks to stay on, try “sockons”. They are pretty amazing! Or Cheski makes some great socks that stay on, too! And don’t forget that all too cute “going home outfit” when they get to make a break from the hospital!

Laundry detergent – You’ll want a baby friendly detergent to start with. I always grab the largest bottle and when it’s empty, I switch to my normal detergent. It’s worked for all my kids, but do what works for you!

Comfort/Play Stuff

Swing – With a ton of swing options, I just recommend the simple side-to-side swing. We’ve had Mamaroos, vibrating seats, forward swings … but the most loved option has been our side-to-side swing and really all we needed!

Newborn lounger – These are PRICELESS. Make sure you have one. I used mine so much with all 3 kids. Best money spent, hands down! And, when baby gets a bit bigger and can hold their own bottle, throw this on the floor with baby on it and they can sit propped drinking their bottle! Great purchase for the whole first year!

Playmat – You’ll need a tummy time play mat. I love the one with the little piano. It grows with them over the first year and it’s amazing!

Activity Chair – These are great to keep baby entertained and happy. This Skip Hop was a favorite around my house!

Caterpillar sit me up – This little thing is pretty cool to help baby sit up and protects them if they tumble as they are learning. Multiple uses and is pretty cute, too!

Toys – Get lots of age-appropriate toys on hand! Here are a few options!

Bumbo Seat – These things are great for a baby who isn’t quite sitting up on their own. I wouldn’t say it’s a MUST HAVE, but definitely will come in handy.

What a list!
