How to create mason jar flower décor

by Meriah

Spring is around the corner. Flowers are getting ready to bloom. It’s March and it’s warming up out there, at least here in Georgia. And Mother’s Day is two mere months away … all these are perfectly valid reasons to try my next project: how to create mason jar flower décor. As you can see, I had a helper!

This project took me about 20 minutes … if I don’t count the interruptions from my 10-month-old, Sawyer! Cause you know, he had other plans for me that required my full attention!

Gather supplies

I had all supplies for this project on hand, except flowers. You can grab some from the dollar store, or fresh flowers work well if you change it out after a couple days.

You’ll need a piece of wood, nails, string or yarn, a hammer, a mason jar template and flowers … that’s it! Well, maybe scissors to cut the string and template, but you feel me.

Getting started

First, I decided the size for my wood. I thought 10″x11″ would be perfect! Then, I went to my computer and Googled ‘Mason Jar clipart’. I found a good candidate from Shutterfly and sized it in Microsoft Word and printed it out. Now I was ready to make my project!

Mason Jar template

I have a lot of grays going on in my house and it’s a hot color for décor and farmhouse stuff right now, so I chose a gray to color my wood. Specifically, I used Peppercorn from Sherwin Williams. It’s a rather dark color, but I mixed water with my paint and brushed it on the wood. I covered the sides and front and then wiped a paper towel all over the wood to soak up any extra paint.

Soak up the paint!

Since I soaked up all the wetness of the paint with my paper towel, I was ready to start hammering in my nails right away. Of course, I first had to cut out my mason jar template. Once I had it cut, I simply used a pencil and traced the edges of the template. I went ahead and hand drew in the top jar lines since it wasn’t a complicated pattern. Then, I was ready to hammer!

Time to hammer in nails

When I hammer in nails for string art, I always put in the nails on all the high points first. These are the places that are more prominent on the picture or stick out more. You can see where I did them in this picture.

Once I have the high points nailed in, I choose an appropriate spacing and nail around the pencil line I traced in from the template. Make sure you leave good spacing at the top of the jar areas so the stems from the flowers can be placed in when you are finished!

Stringing time

After you nail in across the outline you are ready to string. You can use yarn or any type of string … and any color. I went with white. First, tie the string to your nail. I always do a double knot (sometimes triple) just to make sure it’s on there well. Then I just string around the nail. Weaving, circling the nail, moving in and out … many layers! Continue this till you get the thickness of the line you want for your jar.

I did many layers since I had thin string, but it layers on quickly! Once you feel good about your thickness of layers, look for a good nail to stop on. Simply cut your string 5-6” out and then tie the end to a nail. Again, make sure you double or triple knot the end so it doesn’t come lose.

Flowers, flowers, flowers

Now, you are ready for some flowers! Grab the flowers you selected and place them under the string and nails in the “jar”. You can place several with the stem longer and to thicken up the top, cut most the stem off on a few of them and crowd them in with the flowers at the top. This will make it look nice and full with no too many stems showing in the jar.

Command Wall Strips are legit!

Grab some command wall strips (I love these things!) and place on the back of your wood and place on the wall. You have now finished ‘how to create mason jar flower décor … so simple, easy and unique! My son, Miles, and daughter, Harper, were so mesmerized with the process and loved the finished product.

String art is so simple and cute … there are so many options out there to try!

This is very cool. Reminds me of the string pictures I used to make as a child.
