Watermelon - Feature

Um, so it’s now officially SUMMER! I can’t believe how fast 2021 has been going by so far. It’s crazy! We all know summer is the best time for watermelon. Whether it’s for eating or smashing or doing seed spitting contests, its when the watermelons come out to play! So, I want to share my super simple easy way of how to cut watermelon FAST!

I’ve shared a few recipes such as awesome Shrimp Dip or my Grandma’s world-famous Potato Salad, but I thought it would be great to share this melon cutting trick. Lots of people use this technique … but some haven’t even thought of it before! It’ll make life so much easier! So … here you go!

Background

I grew up in Montana and my first job was in the kitchen at the local hospital. It was a great first job and I still talk to a few of my co-workers today, nearly 20 years later! Due to the nature of the job, we had to bake and cook and prepare food in large quantities.

I’m talking about cutting up giant bowls of lettuce, baking massive sheet cakes …. Oh, and bacon galore! And the bacon that we had there was nice and thick and baked up soooo nicely. Mmmmmmm! Sorry, didn’t mean to go on about super, yummy, Montana bacon! Speaking of which, that may be a tasty addition to my potato salad recipe you can check out here! Hmmm.

Montana winters

The negative, or just a small hurdle to many natives, was the weather in Montana during winter. Especially December and January. And with a hospital kitchen job, the days could start as early as 5AM. So, getting up and to work in the snow could be a challenge at times! This picture is one of my last mornings on the job before I moved to North Carolina after high school. I remember it was about -20 degrees! That’s definitely what I do NOT miss about Montana!

Anyway, when I worked a certain shift for the cafeteria, it required me to cut up lots of fruit and veggies in bulk, so I had to learn how to do it quickly and efficiently. As I think back, I believe a dear friend of mine, who passed away unexpectedly a few years ago, was the one to teach me this fruit cutting trick.

Traci, Traci, Traci!

Traci

My friend’s name was Traci and she had a heart of gold and an amazing laugh. I’ll never forget her spirit, that’s for sure! She’d fast walk all around the kitchen trying to get things done quickly. She’d give her big smile and laugh to everyone and she always seemed happy, even through challenges.

She LOVED her daughter, Laci, sooooo much and would have done anything for her. She even let me take Laci out of town one time and she came back with a hamster. Traci wasn’t fond of the new critter, but she let it happen!

I met up with her a couple times after I left the job and came back to visit. Not only did she talk about her Laci, but her grandbabies. I know she’d love to be here doting on them, but her time came to quickly. We love and miss you, Traci!

Use this technique for all melons!

So, this simple way of how to cut watermelon fast works for all melons or whatever else is similar. I always use this technique for honeydew melon and cantaloupe. It’s just super simple and we get to start chowing down very quickly!

How to cut watermelon FAST!

First, grab your watermelon and cut it in half. Set one have flat side down and place the other half out of the way, to cut up separately.

Take your knife (make sure it’s sharp!) and cut off the outer edge, moving the watermelon around as you go. Once you finish the full circle, you are now left with only the inside of the watermelon!

Cut it in half horizontally and then simply dice one way and then the next. Slide the cut-up pieces into a bowl and you BAM … you are done! You can do the same for the other half of the watermelon next, or cover and place in the fridge to cut up later.

Ta-Da!

You now have perfectly cut up melon ready for your summer party … sit back and enjoy the juicy, sweetness and have some fun!

Let me know in the comments below if you plan to try this technique … or if you’ve used this one for years or if have one of your own!

Be blessed!
