Quick & Easy IKEA dresser hack

IKEA Dresser Hack

I love the IKEA Hemnes dressers. They have a sleek look, the drawers glide easily and their color options go with most any décor. If you want some uniqueness in the dresser that also fits your decor, try this quick and easy IKEA DIY dresser hack!

I’d say the only downside to these dressers may be the time consuming nature of putting them together! But I always leave that task up to my husband … which he oddly enjoys.

Ikea Dresser - Original

To do this IKEA Hemnes dresser hack you’ll need to have one of the white stained or gray stained versions of the dresser. The stained versions are super easy to make unique by adding paint in your chosen color!

Sawyer’s Dresser

I tried this IKEA Hemnes DIY dresser hack with the dresser in my son Sawyer’s room. I actually had this dresser in my guest room and due to this Corona virus thing, Ikea doesn’t really have these in stock right now … at least in Atlanta.

I really needed a larger dresser for his clothes, so I stole it from the guest room and will replace that one later!  I didn’t want the dresser in his room to be just white though … and since I was redoing his room to a superhero theme (you can read about that here), I decided to paint the drawer fronts in Sherwin Williams Secure Blue all surface enamel paint, which was part of the color palette I selected for his room.

Start this easy IKEA DIY dresser hack with removing the knobs. You can easily update the knobs if you want to as well. Amazon or Hobby Lobby have some great knobs available, and it can further customize your dresser! I didn’t really need it for this project, but I always keep that in mind when I refinish a dresser.

Dresser Shell

Next, I slightly sanded the drawer fronts with a rougher sandpaper and then wiped clean and did a coat of primer.

Color POP this IKEA dresser hack!

Once I was ready to paint the drawer fronts, I got out my cabinet roller and rolled on four thin coats of the gorgeous Sherwin Williams secure blue paint! When finished with the main color, definitely do a few coats of Minwax polycrylic to protect it. Otherwise, your beautiful paint job won’t last long! I know this dress will get lots of action since it’s in a little boy’s room.

I gotta say, Secure Blue made the dresser POP and it looks amazing! You can also take this further and paint the entire dresser. The dresser shell can easily be painted in the same color as the drawer fronts, or any other color that works for your décor. The possibilities are endless!
